A Record Number of Riders Turned Out on a Picture Perfect Sunday, Thank You Weather!
Again HUGE THANKS to All the Competitors who rocked up yesterday, you were all fantastic out on the track and the atmosphere of the whole day, while it was slightly blurred from my perspective, seemed sensational. We put this event together for you and the amazing turn out made all the hard work that Chris Jones, John Carney, Bron & Myself put in so very worth while.
It was excellent to see so many entrants giving the long solo haul a go. Special mention to a young talent on his First Solo 6 Hour, Lachie McVey great going, plus a wiser man who should know better also out there for the full six hours, Gavin Brown you are legendary.
Special Congratulations to all the women who turned out, it was great to see so many really good female riders on the dirt. Mel Webb you did a great job on your first solo six hour!!!
Yesterday, I wanted to, but forgot to extend my thanks to ALL the SENSATIONAL Pro-Mountain Biking Shops around Perth and the folks behind them:
Tim & Jo at Kalamunda Cycles, Miikeal at Highway Cycles, Jimmy at Bikeforce Midland, The Team at Malaga Cycles, Cyclemania North Perth, Churchill Cycles, Joondalup City Cycles, just to mention a few...
These shops look after so many of us, helping us out on so many various aspects of our Mountain Biking/Cycling Fanaticism.
Without these shops and people who put in the long hours that they do, none of us would be out enjoying our passionate sport.
AND OF COURSE I personally can not thank RIDERS CHOICE CYCLES LEEDERVILLE enough, the guys there help me out giving supportive encouragment and advice all the time, sincere thanks Chris Jones, Rowan Miller, Phil & Steve.
Most Importantly I forgot to Thank My Bike, the RED YETI ROCKET, it is the Most Awesome Machine!
The Rocket Ate-Up Jarrahdale lap after lap, it just does not like to slow down for a second, we were made for each other!
I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM ABOUT TO SAY THIS SO SOON, BUT...
RIDERS CHOICE ARE PLANNING MORE SIX HOUR EVENTS, BIGGER & BETTER...
So we want all your feedback, start posting your comments, or drop in & have a chat with Chris at Riders Choice. Let us know how the Six Hour Event could have been better for you.
I know the parking situation was confused at the start, there was a missed communication about where the drop off zone was, apologies to those affected on their unloading of gear, overall thank you for following the parking directions given to you.
That's All For Now, see you all out & about on your Two Wheels!
PS... Rubes I was just behind You Over All!
PPS... The only thing which would have made the day better in my category (crazy solo females), was if Jo Bennett had been out racing with me, I was tipping you Jo for a Top 10 Over All placing.
HEAL QUICKLY & WELL JO!
Brilliant day. You prepared the weather perfectly. The pasta was a nice touch and very tasy. Thanks to all involved. I was wondering if there is a chance of seeing who was in the teams, like in some previous 12hr results. I would like to peruse how well certain people did as opposed to how well an Elk raced when pitted against a bike shop.
Cheers
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone, Chris, Steph, Bron, the time keepers and everyone else for a great day. My wife and I had an awesome time, and getting a placing was a bonus surprise.
Also it was great to see so many turn out. The first lap was a bit congested but everyone seemed to find their place easily enough. THe track was ideal as well. Thanks again.
There is just one minor thing I noticed with the times though. The sum of the duets and triples individual times and listed total times are 2 minutes different (with the listed total being 2 minutes less). Maybe you forgot to take the 2 minute delay start for the duets and triples into account for everyones first lap. I am pretty sure my first lap was 2 minutes faster than you have listed. This may be more important for some of the faster guys/gals who want to gauge their lap performance against the solo riders. Doesn't really worry me.
Yep, could go on and on but best summed up by saying "What a great day!".
Thanks so much to all the organisers.
The track was the best yet! There wasn't even one part on the track that I started dread though out the day - (can't say I really liked negotiating the two trees - I guess the trees didn't like it either- but all in all a superb track).
Having a free pasta feed at the end of the race - simply the icing on the cake.
Great track, (even for those of us without m/bike skills) great organisation, great people and great weather.
Thanks to all that made it happen. Can we have some more of these
so some of us can redeem ourselves! Thankyou Steph for showing me
the way round the first 3 laps.
Clear skys, no rain, but with rain the week before to harden it up . . . . . .
who wrote the script!
Thanks to the folks from the PMBC and Riders Choice for a great event. Er and I love doing this one as a team. She broke 50, I broke 40, all happy. And starting by missing out the first little bit of single track avoided a word of chaos was a good move.
See yall at the 12 hr!!
-------------------------------------------
I may be slow but I an't dumb
-------------------------------------------
It was my first WA event. I've raced Enduros in SA, Canberra, Victoria and Tasmania (if Wildside is an Enduro). I look forward to the next one but as humans we can't help but compare.
I'd have to say this felt the most layed back out of any event that I've done.
Reflecting I put this down to:
No MC.
I've never been to an Enduro without updates on the race progress. Throughout the race I had no idea who was winning, or any of the great racing that was going on. Some events even have mid race or hourly updates. Which is great if you hear someone you know in another division is having a tight race, you can cheer them on as they go past. Even just the top 3 in each division over the PA keeps everyone in the loop.
No mid race results.
Not really that important for a 6hr but maybe have you considered a mid race leaderboard printout? It wasn't until today that I found out how my lap times were... (probably a good thing).
No bins.
Quite a few used gu pacs on the track. Races like the Kona 24 have household rubbish bins at the end of fire roads for you to throw your sachets at.
No Number of Laps.
At the end when reading the results the only rider I heard mentioned with his total lap number was the Solo Male winner. It's interesting hearing how tight the racing is and in past races it's always been "3rd Place Team Joe Bloggs with 7 laps...."
No killer rocks flagged.
In SA, dangerous rocks get sprayed in high vis. Yellow or Pink. I watched two guys flat on then stupidly managed to double flat on the same rock (in my defence your honour, I thought they had flatted boosting a log 1m further down the track....) I did miss it the next time around but it got me wondering.
Do you spray dangerous rocks over here in on racetracks?
If you have rules pecular to your event, it's a good idea to mention them BEFORE the race.
Yes I NOW know that the racing finished at 4pm. Yes my team-mates knew but somehow though I could pull out the fastest lap of our teams race. At the end of the day, Enduro racing is becoming a more mainstream standardised form of racing. I've done it in a bunch of other states and the rules have all been the same (come in before the deadline and you can do another lap). As the race becomes more popular hopefully more people from interstate will participate. It would then be good to have these local variations re-iterated in the pre-start meeting.
I didn't mind thumping out an extra lap, it was a lovely day for it- but as the rest of them above it's just a couple of suggestions you might want to consider to help make a good race even better.
Look for a quick write up in an Aussie mag soon, and a photo or two!
best course yet...well done for all the hard hours of work put into it, and the organization of the race...all the rdiers I came across were polite/helpful in passing/being passed...much more endearing than the roadie(ooh did I say that...I think lots of us road ride as well, but we know we have more fun) attitude...only thing was the rubbish, even out of respect for the people who worked so hard to build the course...your jersey does have back pockets!!
For all the chickies that may have thrown stuff on the ground...Here's an option for you, stick em in your bra!
I had a hoot yesterday! I loved the track and although I was one of the tortoises out there I enjoyed myself. Sorry if i got in anyone's way on the track.
THank you to the organizers! Can we have more 6hr events??
its good to see current world champions and ex-international mtb stars gracing our tracks...and even carrying their own gear back to the car...good lad sam!!
i would just like to thank everyone who organised the event. i had an awesome time and am still on bit of a high. i would be extremely happy if the following years are half as good.
i was however shocked to find i had missed the start of the solo race as i am used to the start being announced 5 or 10 minutes prior to the actual start, could you please consider this next year?. other than that it was a great day out.
Thankyou!
Just wanted to say it was a great event and a huge thank you to Paul (I think he was number 91?) who looked after me and my swollen knee (now huge and looks like it belongs to someone else - someone very large); a beer is definitely owed.
A HUGE thankyou to everyone especially the competitors who were all so nice to the first timers out there. Thankyou for your patience and encouragement on the track. Now that is sportsmanship.
A big thankyou to current MTB club members (TT and Jen) and to Jo and Tim who have encouraged our family with the sport.
I really enjoyed the day. Sadly I got a flat on my last two laps, which slowed me down quite a lot. Thanks so much to the fellow who gave me a tube and enabled an extra lap to my tally - unfortunately the tube died on my last lap - at the exact same point. Spewing. anway - thanks to the rider's kindness - very much appreciated. It would be great for there to be other 6 hour events. I agree with some of the suggestions of the rider from Canberra. I did a ride in South Australia and they had an mc miked and who greeted everyone as they passed making them feel special no matter where they came and also involving the crowd. Stil a great day. Forgive my novice question - what did she mean by "flat out"?
A great days riding - thanks so much to the organisers!
During one of my laps, a certain "high profile" club member asked me to push another "high profile" club member off his bike. They weren't even in the same category as far as I know. Makes me wonder if the Nice Words spoken after the race were really genuine.
Thanks for all the comments. I think for first time organisors Steph and Chris did a fantastic job (I think if they were seasoned pros they did a great job). The best thing is they want to come back for more. As for the 12 hr we will take on all the comments. There will be a commentator, the rubbish bin idea is great and I will definitely make sure that happens as I was hugely disappointed with the amount of rubbish on course. back pockets people or invest $3 in a Carboshotz bottle. It holds up to 4 shots and no paper riping required.
I hope the request for a push off the bike was jovial.
As for my race well I think next time I will avoid the 3 week no riding tapper and actually prepare properly. Dropping my water bottle near the start of my second last lap was also a huge problem and cramping mid way up the hill and having to sit there for 5 minutes was not great either. Otherwise it was great and I even had the time on my second last lap to think about how good the weather was and how much fun I was having!
See you all plus a friend at the 12hr!
A couple of things I noticed in the results is that Tim Bennett came second overall by only 1 second to the duos! That is an amazing effort. Also if you look at Sam's times he would put in a pretty good showing in an Elite level xc race here in WA. Maybe at the State Champs in October Sam?
Well Done to everyone that competed in the 6hr especially all the solo riders towards the back of the group. The organizers Chris, Steph, Bron, John and all the Riders Choice people who served up the pasta at the end.
Unfortunately there is good aswell as bad, so here I go,
SHAME on all of you for littering with the carbo shots and other power bar rapers. (I think if you have the tallent to pull it out of your pocket in the first case then you must be smart enough to put is back in your pocket when you finished with it, even if it is messy in your jersey pocket, USE A WASHING MACHINE or even better bring your mum so she can clean up after you and not the organisers). I can understand the drink bottles as the can fall out and be tricky to put back in at times and keeps you guessing as you come into the next corner and you see a bottle that wasnt there last lap.
A bin may be a good idea but what happens if people miss the bin will the turn around to pick it up??
A clock would be great to see as the riders come in the the finish so we could decide if another lap was possible with hourly updates on the mic.
Some prizes should of been awarded to the best crash of the day eg. the rider in the solo group that had the big fall and went ass over head a few times (Doozy, I think) and even to Greg Lewis for his silliness the weekend before in practice. Maybe some tubes for the unlucky riders that punchured and for other people that broke stuff like the unlucky rider I heard of that broke his seat post on the last lap (must of been pain full).
Now thats of my chest, cant wait till the 12 hour,
Thanks for the great memories

Riding through transition I was handed a Caramello Koala by my team mate. "Cheers, but it's wrapped" I said, riding slowly away holding the Koala. "Do you want it unwrapped" he said. It was too late for that, precious seconds were already wasting away, so I ripped into the Koala with my teeth, continuing to pedal away and dropping 3 separate pieces of litter in the process as my tidy gimp team mate trotted behind tidying up.
He is for hire at future events. Litter problem solved.
I'd also like to comment on the silver (presumably painted that colour to symbolise DANGER!) water bottle obstacle in the middle of the first downhill singletrack section. Amazing how it didn't move an inch from at least lap 2 until the last lap, even though the owner would have ridden past it at least once. Own up I say - confession is good for the soul.
Great event, with the great turn out of riders, it goes to show this is what MTB riders want. Maybe a couple of 6hr enduro thru the season, and a Karri Cup style of race held in the Perth Area, a enduro series consisting of 3-4 races of the year bring them on.
Great job done by all, who was involved in organising this event.
Me too, I would love to know if anybody that was taking pics on the day was going to make them available to the competitors.
My first MTB enduro, very enjoyable, very well run.
Scotty
hey thanks so much for organising a brilliant event. the track was in superb condition and was a joy to ride. the atmosphere out there was real friendly. and there were lotsa nice touches during the day - that pasta feed went down a treat. and it was all so well organised and hassle free - the organisers and volunteers did a fantastic job.
one of the things that occured to me was that there were long streches without marshalls. not a problem for finding the track cos it was so well marked. but for first aid, i've always thought that a quick response can make a big difference to someone who's had a bit of a tumble. for sure most falls in jarrahdale will only result in bumps & scrapes but now and then you'll get some unfortunate soul that really does make a mess of themself and it's a fair bet that without anyone out on the track to radio it in, they're in for a nasty long wait.
is it doable for future events to have marshalls/first aiders permamanently located at strategic places round the course? like maybe at the bottom of the main downhills?
haha, that silver water bottle proved to be a pain! on my last lap i was coming up to it, and noticed it was gone! I though awesome! someones moved it! but the bloody thing was replaced with a large rock!!
Yes everyone it was me, Steph asking Bron to be pushed off his bike, I suppose it was a joke!
I definitely misssed Greg's very subtle sense of humor, sorry Greg I'm a bit slow off the bike.
Next time catch him for me, he's getting too fast and you know all is fair in love & war...
I only saw one single speed out there, which was me, Rigid SS 29'er, wrong gear, and real slow to boot. I pulled the pin after 3.5 hours as I was still suffering from the flu. I must say you guys put on a fine event for my first mountain bike ride in WA. I can't wait to get healthy and get out and some more Perth events.
The idea about the bin works in other states, not everyone gets it in, and most people when they miss just keep riding. It just means that at the end of the race the bin has acted like a magnet, with most of the carbo shots nearby allowing it to be easily cleaned up in a minute rather than having nothing there and them scattered around the coarse randomly.
I wouldn't be so hard on fellow competitors dropping them on purpose. I used "Stinger" gels for a while which were made from honey. Several times I thought I had shoved the gel wrapper in my back pocket only to find it had wrapped around and stuck to the back of my glove. I'm sure I jettisoned serveral, never delibrately but a part of Enduro racing is pushing yourself and sometimes you don't notice these small things that happen (your hands can be pretty numb).
I'm up a work, so I don't have time to do photos, hopefully next week.
Dunk, great to see that you're over from the East. Dunk is a bit of a leg. on the Farkin forum so it's good he's made it out!

Maybe some tubes for the unlucky riders that punchured and for other people that broke stuff like the unlucky rider I heard of that broke his seat post on the last lap (must of been pain full).
Now thats of my chest, cant wait till the 12 hour,
Thanks for the great memories

Give Doozy 2 prizes!?!?!
:)
Spot prizes are always a good thing though!
A prize for the gimp!

It certainly was John, one of many on the day. A great time had. Besides, I couldn't catch the bugger!
More Enduro Races
Great event, with the great turn out of riders, it goes to show this is what MTB riders want. Maybe a couple of 6hr enduro thru the season, and a Karri Cup style of race held in the Perth Area, a enduro series consisting of 3-4 races of the year bring them on.
Great job done by all, who was involved in organising this event.

Me too, I would love to know if anybody that was taking pics on the day was going to make them available to the competitors.
My first MTB enduro, very enjoyable, very well run.

Sabotage
I hope the request for a push off the bike was jovial.
As it turned out Stephanie caught up to me just at the end of the 5th lap and I didn't have it in me to regain the lead. Male pride shattered again :)
sarcasm gone missing
I hope the request for a push off the bike was jovial.
I hate it when I miss the sarcasm!
first aid
hey thanks so much for organising a brilliant event. the track was in superb condition and was a joy to ride. the atmosphere out there was real friendly. and there were lotsa nice touches during the day - that pasta feed went down a treat. and it was all so well organised and hassle free - the organisers and volunteers did a fantastic job.
one of the things that occured to me was that there were long streches without marshalls. not a problem for finding the track cos it was so well marked. but for first aid, i've always thought that a quick response can make a big difference to someone who's had a bit of a tumble. for sure most falls in jarrahdale will only result in bumps & scrapes but now and then you'll get some unfortunate soul that really does make a mess of themself and it's a fair bet that without anyone out on the track to radio it in, they're in for a nasty long wait.
is it doable for future events to have marshalls/first aiders permamanently located at strategic places round the course? like maybe at the bottom of the main downhills?
thanks again
silver water bottle
haha, that silver water bottle proved to be a pain! on my last lap i was coming up to it, and noticed it was gone! I though awesome! someones moved it! but the bloody thing was replaced with a large rock!!
makes the course challenging anyways!

War on the Track
Yes everyone it was me, Steph asking Bron to be pushed off his bike, I suppose it was a joke!
I definitely misssed Greg's very subtle sense of humor, sorry Greg I'm a bit slow off the bike.
Next time catch him for me, he's getting too fast and you know all is fair in love & war...

fastest single speed lap?
I only saw one single speed out there, which was me, Rigid SS 29'er, wrong gear, and real slow to boot. I pulled the pin after 3.5 hours as I was still suffering from the flu. I must say you guys put on a fine event for my first mountain bike ride in WA. I can't wait to get healthy and get out and some more Perth events.

The idea about the bin works

Travis Deane! Any photos yet! Would love to see them!
honey stingers
hey scratchy,
Just wondering about the honey stingers. I had a friend send me some (hidden) in a package from the US and was worried they wouldn't make it through.
Have you had any problems with getting them into AUstralia? I would like to have my friend send me more.
What are your thoughts on them? I found they worked pretty fast & tasted oh so yummy!
Thanks
C
