Disc brake & suspension fork conversion

I have already done a lot of research on the web with regard to converting my Shogun Prairie Breaker TI (1991 vintage) from cantilever brakes to disc brakes together with a suspension fork.
There are a couple of questions I have left unanswered.
1. Have been looking at using 'Avid' mechanical disc brakes, but am unable to ascertain whether they are compatable with my old 7-speed Deore XT STI brake levers. I know they work with vee brake levers, anyone tried this?
2. My bike has a Tioga avenger threaded headset. Can you buy threaded steerer tubes to go into suspension forks, the headset is still 1 1/8" diameter. Anyone know.

Cheers and thanks for your time....

Threaded steerer forks

i have an old ( circa 95) Kojima MTB that i had at the time converted ( a trade in deal at Bike force south perth) to front suspension with a great Marzocchi xcr fork ( full 50mm hydraulic travel, and the 6 stage dial adjuster). this was ordered and fitted with a threaded steerer so i guess were available once.
The problem i have is that the fork has blown a seal and leaks oil, thus making the rest of the bike worthless, cos no one wants a shiny Alu framed, canti braked, araya rimmed, 7 sp. MTB these days. Do they???
Too good to throw out on council collection, any suggestions welcomed. its taking up valuable shed space and if any one can suggest switching back to fixed fork for minimal outlay i'm happy to hear it.
or is there an old bikes home to retire to?

gclark on the triwa forum is

gclark on the triwa forum is an old(er) bloke who takes older frames for various projects and to redistribute where they will be used.

If you would like to donate your bike to him I'm sure he'd be more than happy to take it off you and give it another good home.

well avid mechanicals won't

well avid mechanicals won't normally work with canti brake levers, the leverage ratio is different. avid do make a road bike specific disc brake caliper, that ought to work allright. and dirtworks sell an inline cable pull converter for using mech disks with canti levers.
changing fork steerers, most new forks don't have removable steerers any more so you can't change them. you can still buy crappy ones with threaded steerer. but if you're buying brakes and forks anyway, then a stem and headset wouldn't add much to your budget. go a-head punk, make my day. but don't go a-nal and make your whole week.
