NIGHT RIDING

Just wondering if there are any other regular night riders out there who do freeride/allmountain night rides. Or are we just a rare notorious underground tough breed of riders having more fun than everybody else?

night rides anyone ???

You dont know what your missing out on.

night vision goggles.

Anyone have a spare set of night vision goggles.
I have just snapped the connector and they will be out order for a month.

I'm pretty sure I saw some

I'm pretty sure I saw some in an army surplus store when I was back home in April. Do you still get the depth perception issue in the new ones? That used to cause some problems :)

night vision

Cheers thanks for that.
I shall have it for saturday night rides now.

The depth perception has been sorted out by changing from green to orange.
Its a cheap upgrade and certainly worth it.

Woohoo. :):)

Orange filter problems

Only problem with the orange filters is they attract mosquitos like nothing I've even seen and you have to ride like Sam to out run them or risk a nasty dose of ross river

Personally I prefer the Spraktgen daylight-nightlight freeride goggle-helmet with the battery built into the actual helmet, it cost more than my bike but it I also use it for catching Marron and night fishing, so it was well worth it!

orange is better

I still prefer orange.
Better for dept perception, especially when you are high off the ground on the freeride stuff.
Misjudging a big drop to the ground can be harsh.

This one is good but you

This one is good but you have to be careful not to have the magnifier on while actually riding:

There's a sale on this one at the moment:

You could try some really cheap ones but they only give you a range of 50ft & they look very naff:

Night Vision?

I've never used night vision goggles - do they really work? I've always used a couple of sets of lights, handlebar mounted & helmet mounted & I've never done any sort of freeriding at night, only singletrack.

night vision

I have just boggied up the connector and now have a spare set of night vision goggles. Ill pm you for this sat ride if your interested.

I don't have my bike yet, its still in a container on a ship but I m very curios about this night ridng?

night ride at the Dell

There is a night ride run by the Munda Biddi Foundation on the 14th of October at the Dell. It's a full moon the next night but the moon should be pretty bright on the 14th hence the name of the ride, Munda Biddi Mooners. Check out the rides top right hand corner of this page. There is a feed and cuppa afterwards.

Cheers

A few of us went out for a night ride last night at te Dell. It was awesome. Riding in light rain that was making the trails absolutely perfect. There are some great trails up there you just have to spend some time riding around and follow your nose.

ride with yoda

We usually get 7 to 15 on regular rides, some times the number swells close to 20.

Anyone see the night vision goggles in sunday times magazine 28 sept.?
With only 15 meters vision, you will need Darth Vaders deadly dark side Jedi powers to ride with them.
Cheap and nasty toys.
May the force be with you.

Yeah thats 15 mtrs in complete blackout Wal, with any moon it jumps to 25-30

anyway 15 is plenty to react, a couple of crew I ride with are using those goggles and love them.

I've just spent my tax

I've just spent my tax refund ordering a pair of these babies, Mrs Bofh WILL be pleased: http://www.nightvision.com.au/products.php?product=NVA-D2MV

I can't wait to try them out.

WED night?? anyone

Anyone for a night vision run down millbrook before the burn off, or just a stroll thru the log trail.
Oh yeah found a novel way to have a heads up display, just need a dh helmet.

Goggles

I'm keen, night riding sounds like a real blast. Where do you get the goggles from?

goggles

I will pm you about the goggles, then you can enjoy the wonders of the weird and wonderful dark secrets of the night.

anyone with a full face

anyone with a full face helmet they want to give away, prefebly a black one?

Minimum Lighting Required?

I am doing research on biking lights in preperation for round tu it in November and the Dell ride sounds like a good place to start + I am a Munda Biddi member. What sort of basic lighting system would get me by? The Ay up stuff looks pretty good and relative inexpensive at $269?? Would that cut the mustard? Cheers.

lights

Mine cost under $90 including charger. DIY
last for about 2.5 hours.

I think the LEDs are the way to go.

The Ayup lights are the way

The Ayup lights are the way to go. I don't own a set but they are super light and at that price are amazing value. Get the helmet mount and you won't even know they are up there. They come with a 3 hr battery or you can up date to a 6hr battery. With a 6hr battery you will never have to worry about them on any ride. You can also buy a head strap to wear them around like a camp headlight making them pretty versatile.

batteries

Be carful which batteries you get.
Lithium Ion can explode.
They can be like a small granade, if not used properly.

I have a set of Ay-ups

I bought a set at the beginning of winter. I went for the MTB kit with the dual helmet and handle bar sets. with the intention of doing some night rides on my MTB over summer. I havent quite got there on that front yet. but they have had a good workout over winter on my road bike.

lights are great, i regularly get flashed by oncoming drivers so they must be good:). battery life is pretty good too. the 2hr battery is tiny and I just hang it off my stem. so much better than my old cat eye daylights kit that i had for years. only down side is that the batteries don't fade out, they just cut out, as i found out at 6.30 last sunday night while in freo. my fault though as i forgot to swap the batteries over before i went out.

night vision goggles

I have never used goggles on the streets yet, only in the bush.
No need for them with so much extra light around.
Batteries last forever.

Maybe get a few sets of

Maybe get a few sets of these for the Night Rides:

helmet or handle bars

Not sure what others do, but we mount our lights on our helmets, but I have ridden with a crew who only put their lights on the handlebars.
Whats the experience of others, helmet or handle bar mounted lights??
