What's a good XC platform for an older rider to start with?

I've got a couple of Giant rides in my stable to date, an 08 TCR C2 road bike and an 08 Reign X1 for bit of free ride fun but toying with the idea of getting into some XC racing for some fun.
I've had Giant for last 10 years, but open to suggestions if anyone would care to comment, price range say $1000 to $2000 either new or second hand.

I picked up a GT I-drive for $1400 and it handles everything from XC to light freeride trails. Its light and has great pedal performance.
