Thanks Timmy

For a newbie I would say that sections of the munda biddi or the Jarrahdale circuit are the best place to start, just probably give Jarrahdale a miss this weekend since there is an adventure race on down there. The course at Jarrahdale is not the best marked so it may not hurt to ask if other people are riding there to show you round for a day, you can't go far wrong though alone.
Turner hill and marrinup are also worth the drive to Dwellingup, some of the guys from here have done some great work on the turner hill track recently and it rides well. both of these courses are well marked and easy to follow.
I'd recommend starting off on the heritage trails amongst the hills of John Forrest National Park. It's a easy fire road track to start off on, after that adventure off onto the many side single tracks which lead off the trail & then head back to it. To get started, the head of the trail commences at the top of the hill of Morrison Rd Swan View, easy signed & parking right there.

Timmy,
The best place to start looking is the XC tracks section of this website: http://www.perthmtb.com/node/208
