Went for a little ride the other day on one of the many "secret" trails that adorn our hills and was extremely disappointed to see that someone had taken it upon themselves, in an effort to make the trail a bit easier to follow, take to it with a spray can.....wtf....marking the ground, trees and whatever along the way. THEN having done that, decided to just leave their spent spray can lying there.
Please, show some respect.
I think we are all agreed that the unsactioned trails that pop up here and there aren't necessarily right in everyones eyes, but to just blatantly create an eyesore and then litter our bush really doesn't cut it.
Enough grizzling. Aren't the trails an absolute delight this time of the year.
Cheers
mmm i think that the marking
mmm i think that the marking is the least of the problems but keep the rubbish guys
Goatfarm
Goatfarm has been looking quite grotty recently........ old plastic bottles and the like.....
It is becoming a bit of an issue....
Litter
It disgusts me how people can just throw there crap on the ground in these places. It can break the heart and souls of committee's
(&trail fairys) who put in hours of there own time to make these places happen.
Its a bit of beat but i spent most of my last friday chasing salmon round a couple of local metro haunts and one place i felt like i was casting from the middle of a landfill facility(woodys point).
Trails or Beach: The funniest bit is they bring it there in a bag or a car so take it back the way it came. As the ol sayings go the only thing need left behind are maxxis marks or footprints.

For shame!!!
The top of Gunjin is looking pretty crapola too!
As for marking out the trail WTF, Whats the point of MTBing if there are signs everywhere saying that theres a jump or dropoff and if every log over is spray painted.
It kinda Defeats the purpose of riding on the trails.
If you want to see all obstacles clearly marked take up road riding!!
woo sah
shifty: deep breathe innnn, out, innnnnnnnnnnn, outt
How is it that these nice smooth flowing singletracks come to be? People take the time to rake out a trail, and then they are ridden in. Having ridden some very new trails in my time, they are very difficult to follow because a definitive trail has yet to be ridden in. This is where these markings, either taped or painted, are crucial to keep everyone riding the same trail... needless to say that once ridden in, they have done their job. I know for a fact that tree-safe (how so? I don't know) paints are available and are being used appropriately- in some cases.
As far as littered cans of paint- yeah, that's irresponsible!
Don't get me wrong, maybe i
Don't get me wrong, maybe i didn't explain myself so well......some subtle markings would be fine.....but these markings were over the top to point of being unsightly. What's more, surely any markings or work on trails should be left to the original "trail pixies".
I've always believed the unsaid rule of not touching/changing what you didn't create.....unless it's a necessary repair, then if you ride it, you should also be responsible to maintain it.
But yes, my main gripe was the fact the can was just piffed in the bush.....just f....g poor attitude that is.
Keep riding
With regard to vandalism, I
With regard to vandalism, I have just ridden down Gungin and someone has begun building a brand new trail of big northshore style obstacles about 50m off the main track. I don't have a problem with new trails, but these things are huge, unsightly and the builders have taken to cutting down trees to clear the way and for building materials. Some of the trees have been cut from well off the new trail.
I very much doubt that these structures are sanctioned by DEC, and the environmental damage inflicted to build them will do nothing to promote the image of mountain bikers as responsible users of our natural bushland. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see access limited if this carries on.
Has anyone else seen these new structures? What do you think? What should the responsible users of the area do about it?
Vandalism or North shore ?
As a responible user of the area I would put up a sign with two big black diamonds on it saying "Caution Technical Trail Features Ahead"
Next I would help clean up the mess a bit.
I think, that if it's not DEC approved trail then dont ride it. It you dont like it, Don't ride it.
Unless we have an area of the quality of Whistler, then this type of trail will continue to happen whether you like it or not, or DEC like it or not.

They want the trail fairy's on there side to do the right things, but there needs to be a quicker process than what they have. I doesnt need to be overnight but when it takes 1-2 years just to get a go ahead then however long to build it???. Well i wonder why the trail fairy business is still so productive.

Quality
There will always be trail pixies out there doing their thing....and bless them that they do do their thing....for without them would we have any of the sensational trails we have today. Not saying what they do is right.
The problem lies in the quality, or lack thereof of some of the trails and the features that adorn those trails......some of it is downright stupid and dangerous, (not because of what's been built, but because of how it's been built). If you are going to build something, whether it's just a virging trail or a structure.....put some f----g thought and effort into it to ensure it will last, have minimal impact on the immediate surrounds and utilise the natural terrain. And PLEASE do not build out of pallets, they are as weak as paper. And if you need to be chopping down reasonably sized trees to do your thing, you are doing the wrong thing in the wrong spot.
What's more, when you're done, take all the other crap AWAY!!! otherwise you're no better than the scum that rocks up with atrailer load of crap and dumps it in the bush
