about to move to perth!

sometime in july i'll be comming to perth (bentley more specifically) to study abroad at curtin university for a semester. i'm really excited, but i'm trying to figure out what bike i should bring. around home (richmond va in the US) i mostly ride cyclocross and cross country. what are the trails like here? i see you've got a good bit of DH and XC, but how hilly/rough is it? would i be ok on a single speed or am i absolutely going to need some gears to make it up hills? i only want to have one bike while i'm over here to simplify things, so i was thinking that a single-speed cross bike might work for commuting and trail riding. i just wanted to get some opinions on if this is going to work for your area or not, thanks.

The conditions here probably

The conditions here probably don't lend themselves to a 'cross bike off road.
The ballbearing gravel that dominates means wide tyres are a must. Might I suggest a Single Speed 29'er?
Chuck on 700x35C slicks for the road and 29er tyres for the hills. I ride a Single-speed Cross bike for commuting
but I wouldn't take it anywhere near my local xc loop.

Don't know how fit you are but plenty of single speeders get around up in the hills so no reason
why you shouldn't either.

Daver

thanks one other thing i was

thanks

one other thing i was concerned about is bike theft around perth. how bad is it? where i live now if you have a cable lock your bike won't be there if you come back after one night, you need a u-lock or a good chain lock if you ever want to see it again. also anything quick release generally dissapears after an hour, but people generally leave things alone if they're bolted down. some places in the us are worse tho, and even bolted down parts will be gone after a while.

how's perth? are my wheels safe if they're quick release? do i need them to be bolted? should i lock them up with the frame regardless?

Curtin = black hole for bikes

Don't bring a good bike to Curtin. I work there & bring my bike into the office if I commute. I'd suggest picking up a $100 K-Mart special to commute on.

Wanted: Complete Skyway Streetbeat or Streetstyler. PM me if you see one.

Curtin theft.

sorry i don't know all the australian slang, what's flogged mean?

it's looking like i'm probably going to bring an SS trek multitrack 700 with some fatter tires and other general upgrades unless i find something better between now and then. think anyone will mess with an old beater like that?

Any bike would still be

Any bike would still be stolen (no matter what it is) in Australian especially with our great coloured cousins.

and flogged means stolen
