Photography at Races

Is there Photography organised for all race meetings both Club round and State round or only events like the State Champs and Enduro's.
There are a couple of sites that have posted pictures from last seaon but I am not sure if they can be mentioned on the PMBC site for anyone else who is interested or is not in the know.

Photographers are never organised. Any amateur/pro photographers at races are there out of their own interest. However often they rely on selling photos to make a living, so its important that people buy photos from them or they won't come back. Anyone is welcome to post links, whatever to sites displaying photos from any WA races. We support any local photographers wanting to come and take photos at races and will try to assist them in any way we can.

But what are you guys prepared to pay for a pro photographer?

I'm a pro photographer, although I mainly do scenics (see www.scenebyhird.com). I'd love to regularly come and take photos of the events, but I know riders would rather spend money on their bikes than on photographs of themselves riding. I know I would - and do!

If you want a pro to come out and make shots, you have to make it worth their effort. I'd be interested in doing it if I could make a profit of around $20 per hour (including all costs, post-processing time and framing.) That means you'd be looking at a price of around $40 for an A4-sized print, or $120 for the same print framed. Would you guys pay that?

So what would you pay for a framed print? I know what I can make them for, but would riders place enough value on the photographs to buy them from me if I were to put in the time to come out and get shots of you? Do you even want prints? (ie, do you just want low-res files to send to your mates over the net?) The very fact that nobody is currently coming out to take your photos tells me that it's not profitable for them to do so. Tell me that's wrong and I'll give it a go.

Cheers,
Graeme

Purchases

I have purchased 4 photos from sporting images.com.au (A4 and 3 5x7) and 1 (5x7) from circlework.com.au from the 12hr Alcoa race
All prices seem fairly similar and fair from what I have asked of a friend who is a photojournalist.
I would say to people its well worth the investment for memories.

All the same thanks to the folk who have attended events and provided fantastic pictures.

Circlework will be attending

Circlework will be attending alot of the races this year, Just have not done any of the club round so far.
You will know when we have been as preview pics will be posted here soon after the race
Regards
Troy

Karri Cup

All the photos of the Karri Cup are now up.

http://www.greatkarriride.com.au/travisdeane/index.html

I was out there shooting for a Magazine (more info soon) and this kinda happened on the side. As I'm not set up for it you need to email travisdeane2000@yahoo.com and I'll give you the details on what to do. I'll email you the .jpg and it's up to you how big you want to print it. As I'm not set up for it's pretty cheap, $11 for one $20 for 2 or $25 for 3.

It's a lot of work and I don't think I could be arsed on a regular basis. Support Troy at www.circlework.com.au otherwise you might find there is no one regularly shooting. I can't be relied on for work commitments (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Free Photography

As a service to the club and the sport in general, Picturegraph Photography will be taking photo's at most, if not all, the XC State Round's and the XC State Champs. No plans have been made for DH events yet. Photo's will be taken of almost all riders regardless of category

As a further service to the club, all photo's taken will be offered FREE to all competitors taking part.

This is not an official announcement and hopefully John Carney has or will be notified shortly on the details of this offer, after which he will be able to make a more public notification.

Of course this offer will only go ahead with the support of the club and its members. So please express your interest

Thanks,

Bent

supporting you Bent!

photos are appreciated, i can never seem to take decent ones, look forward to it.

... and the market crashes to an all-time low ....

In financial news today, shares in Scene by Hird and CircleWork plummeted on the rumour of free photography by a competing photography company, PictureGraph Photography.

"There is simply no way left for us to make any money from our photography when our competition cuts the value of photography to nothing" a representative from Scene by Hird said today. "From now on, all riders will expect to receive their photographs for free. This sets a dangerous and obviously unsustainable precedent for the industry" he went on to say.

CircleWork was unavailable for comment.

Graeme

Fark, Free photos, Luckily

Fark, Free photos, Luckily my broker dumped my stock in circleworks before this became public!

You get what you pay for. Mine are cheap because I wasn't shooting for an event, for a mag (I shoot differently).

The time, money that goes into going out to a race, shoot, editing photos, uploading them onto a website, hosting and then paying for the hosting and then responding to emails like "have you go any of rider 247" offering them for free is a great way of saying "in 3 months this will be too much of a pain in the arse and costing me money or taking away from my riding/family time"

Plus I've got my gear getting dusty, it does take it's toll. Good luck to you sir for offering a free service, but you are nuts.

Mixed News I guess....

Sounds interesting with all the options that will be popping up.
Who will create the best pictures?????
If the best shots come with a price this rider is still willing to pay for the services and time provided.

Photography at Races

OMG! Free photography at XC events for competitors - that's awesome. But it does rob the photographer of money given the amount of time and effort it takes to put all of the photo's together. In the past I've found that circlework & picturegraph take excellent shots and i'd be prepared to pay a reasonable price for prints if I felt it was worth it. So either way I support both ideas. Well done to picturegraph for offering a free service though.
