Wanted: Cheap shock to replace old Mag 21

Hi all,
Helping my friend start commuting, but his bike has a busted up front Mag 21 shock which he'd like to replace. Anyone got something suitable?

Canti or v-brakes?
Do you need a cable stop for cantis ..... or are you running v-brakes?
From memory the mag21's were about 63mm, is this about right?
May have some options.
